Standing Together in the Rain

As I stood outside after school yesterday, enjoying the rarity of a Henderson rain shower, it reminded me that the start of a New Year is a great time for new beginnings. Most of us are quick to make New Year Resolutions, but the question is…how realistic are those resolutions, and how many have we kept throughout the year?

Perhaps, we are going about it all wrong. Instead of telling myself, for example, that I will not eat a chocolate bar until next year as I reach for one in my candy bowl, I am going to take on the persona of the rain and wash away those things that are a hindrance to my peace, my joy, and my success. Like the rain, we can wash those obstacles through the gutters and watch them disappear.

According to several surveys, only 10% of those who make resolutions for the new year actually accomplish them. So how can we help to increase that percentage for our children and ourselves?

This is a new year and a new semester, so why not think in terms of goals? We can begin by having honest conversations with our children. We certainly have high expectations of them, but what do they expect of us, and how are we helping or hindering them in achieving their goals?

Sometimes we ask our children to be accountable without reflecting and communicating the same for ourselves. If we can make that magical time to really listen to our children, then we can set our goals together, share our progress, revamp what isn’t working, and celebrate our success.

Just think how meaningful it would be to stand together in the rain and wave goodbye to those obstacles that held us back in 2022, as we begin a new and positive journey in 2023.
