Principal's Message

Jackie Carducci GJHS Principal

Hey All…it's that time of year! Get ready to take a journey into a bright, happy, colorful place full of adventures, mysteries, romance, sci-fi…there is something for everyone as we celebrate the beginning of Reading Week on Monday.

Students can transport themselves into the wonderful world of books by visiting Mr. Slocum’s Book Fair in the Greenspun Library. They just have to find the right book, and then, maybe, they will love reading as much as I do.

I tell students that I love to read because reading takes me to places that I have never been. As I turn the pages, I get to experience the lives of different characters, cultures, and time periods. I get to escape from the unending demands of reality and get lost in the exciting  journeys of characters who have to overcome challenges just like we do.

I emphasize how much we can learn from the characters that we fall in love with as we get to know them through the written word. I encourage them to keep looking until they find the right book.

“The right book,” I explain, “will be the one that you can’t stop reading until you get to the last page. It will make you smile, cry, laugh out loud, or make you reflect about your own life decisions.”

As we celebrate Reading Week, my hope is that students will find the right book so that they will love reading as much as I do. They can begin this quest  by stopping in the library this week to browse through the many books at Mr. Slocum’s amazing book fair.

NAEP Testing: Greenspun Junior High School selected eighth-grade students will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. The students will participate in a math or reading assessment that takes about 120 minutes, which includes transition time, directions, and completion of survey questions. Your child's grades will not be affected. Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question. While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education.

For more information about NAEP survey questions, please visit https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section "What Questions Are on the Test?"
