Principal's Message
Giving Thanks
As we begin our Thanksgiving holiday, despite the many challenges that come our way, my hope is that we all take time to reflect on our blessings and to thank those who bring joy in our lives.
Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
Events & Honors:
CCSD Honor Orchestra: Congratulations to Abigail Barclay and Prince Tyler! They represented Greenspun at the CCSD Honor Orchestra. This highly competitive orchestra is made up of the best students in Clark County. Way to go Abigail and Prince!
Science Equipment Grant: Congratulations to Science teacher Kara Matthews, who was awarded the Junior League of Las Vegas Education grant for the Greenspun JHS science department for the purchase of laboratory materials and supplies! Ms. Matthews' grant proposal was chosen from more than 200 applicants. The grant awarded $1,400 for all 6th grade science classes to implement supplemental lab activities, such as the fecal transplant lab, cellular respiration lab, and chemical reactions. The funds will be used for hands-on activities after each unit is completed.
Robotics Tournament: This past Saturday, launching this week of gratitude, Greenspun Robotics hosted the VexIQ "Newbie" Invitational Robotics Tournament as a "give back" event for our Henderson and Las Vegas community. Twenty brand-new robotics programs and coaches competed while also being mentored by current Greenspun robotics team members. Even more exciting, except for positions that require ages (5 people) the entire event was run by former Greenspun robotics students. From our head referee, Chacen Rasavong, to our judges, Ella Drakulich and Elijah Biddle, to Refs Madi Corless, Taylor Hovey, Cole Myers, Zachary Bellante, Khoi Tran, the day was a celebration of the amazing legacy of the Greenspun Robotics program. Even our dynamic emcees, Alexandria and Jesse Sundstrom, were former Dolphins. I am overwhelmed by the support from former team members, our phenomenal parents, and our current team members! It all went off without a hitch. A sweet, fun fact is that Chacen, the Head Ref, and two of the judges, Ella and Elihah, were from Ms. Juliano's first-ever robotics team 8 years ago and were the first-ever Nevada State Elementary Robotics Champions. They are now seniors at Green Valley High School and are ready to take on the world! The coaches of all the new teams were so grateful for the mentorship at their first-ever event and sent many words of praise and gratitude for the guidance they received from our young engineers. A most special shout out to our event sponsors, the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Sunshine Minting, Inc., Frontier Stonework, and Nevada Gold Mines, who support the mission and growth of our program. I feel so grateful to be surrounded by such a community of support.
Counting Yearbook Blessings: On this week of giving THANKS, I want to take a moment to share my gratitude for our Digital Storytelling/Yearbook Crew. The pictures you see in this newsletter, the yearbook, on our school bookmark page, throughout the building, and banners ARE taken by this crew of 17 students. They take very seriously capturing the memories of our community. They are a hardworking, amazing group, and I am thankful for them!
Running Club: Starting next week, Running Club will only be held on Mondays. Thanks, and please see Ms. Lopez if you have any questions.
Safe Routes to School: Parents, please take a moment and complete the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) survey regarding your students' mode of travel to and from school. The survey is for parents with students in grades K-12. If you have more than one child in the Clark County School District (CCSD), attending the same school, please complete one survey only for the eldest student in each school. The survey asks you to check areas that affected your decision to allow your child to walk/bike to school. With this information, we are able to advance the safety education programs we bring to the schools and improve areas along walking/bike routes to your child's school. The survey will only take a moment and does not ask for any names, however, there is a place for comments at the bottom. Surveys are due no later than November 22, 2023. CLICK HERE for the survey!
Birthday Greetings: Do you want an easy and fun way to celebrate your child's birthday at school? For $15, we will display a short message on the outdoor digital marquee to help celebrate the day. Additionally, a bag of treats and a personalized birthday card will be delivered to your child during the school day. All funds raised help support Greenspun clubs and activities. CLICK HERE to submit a birthday greeting for your child!
