Kindness Matters

“If you don’t have anything nice to say,” don’t say it at all,” my mother reminded me each day as I left for school during my teen years.

At the time, I didn’t think about the importance of what she said. Instead, I heeded her words of wisdom because she always gave me sound advice. Now, as an adult, I see the importance of my mother’s words more than ever. As author Ina Hughs states, “Words can shatter the soul,” and I couldn’t agree more.

That is why kindness matters…two simple words that have the power of a superhero. It is a power that can bring happiness, confidence, and a sense of well-being, not only to others, but to ourselves, as well.

If only we could instill this bit of knowledge into the hearts and minds of our children as they walk into school each day. If we could remind our children to keep their negative comments to themselves and share the positive ones instead, we, like my mother, will inspire our children to believe that kindness matters.
