Military Family Resources

Greenspun Junior High School values the many families that live in our community who have ties to the military. As a school, we understand that military youth go through unique circumstances and situations and we want every military family to know we are here to help. This webpage is designed to provide you with easy access links to helpful resources. In addition, the staff in our schools have experience in assisting military youth and their families, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school counselor for additional assistance.

Here are some additional ways we support our military students in transition:​

Student Ambassadors welcome new/military students as they transition to our school.

Military Awareness Month. Celebrating our Military families through a series of school-wide events.

Weekly support groups for students of active military parents/guardians.

Students and families are given complimentary admission to attend a school-organized event of their choice, such as Student Council events, Athletic events, or Performing Arts events. Students/Parents should reach out to the school liaison to request event tickets.

Military Family Appreciation Night at a school football game.

Designated Resource Board for students of Military families: posting community events, special interest activities, and opportunities for engagement.

Child Mind Military Families: To help support parents in — and out — of uniform we’ve put together a collection of articles that address mental health and parenting concerns relevant to families who serve. We explore strategies for dealing with the strain of deployment, helping children manage frequent moves, and coping with a parent’s brain injury or PTSD. Experts share advice on how to know when children are not responding in a healthy way to stressors in the family, and more.

Military Children in Our Schools Canvas Course: This is a self-paced course focused on assessing and addressing the unique needs of military-connected students in our schools and is required for school Points of Contact applying for the Purple Star School Award. This course is designed to provide background information and assistance for educators as they provide instruction for students who have family members serving in the military. Thank you for taking the first step in creating a welcoming school for Nevada's military children and families.

​MilitaryFamily.org: NMFA is the voice of military families because, for 50 years, we have proven that we stand behind service members, their spouses, and their children. Our Association is the “go to” source for Administration Officials, Members of Congress, and key decision makers when they want to understand the issues facing our families. They know we have “boots on the ground” with military families and understand better than anyone that “military families serve, too.” Through the support and programs we provide, and our respected voice on Capitol Hill and with the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, our Association always looks out for the families who stand behind the uniform and for those who serve.​

Tutor.com for U.S. Military Families: Tutor.com for U.S. Military Families, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, is a program that provides on-demand, online tutoring and homework help at no cost to eligible service members, civilian personnel, and their dependents. With live, expert tutors available 24/7, military-connected students can receive academic help at their moment of need—anywhere they have an internet connection.

Military Family Resiliency Training: FOCUS (Families OverComing Under Stress) provides resilience training to military children, families, and couples. It teaches practical skills to help families and couples overcome common challenges related to a military life. It helps build on current strengths and teach new strategies to enhance communication and problem solving, goal setting and creating a shared family story

Navy Marine Corps Relief Society: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members, and survivors when in need; and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs.

Navy Child Development Centers: When you’re confident that your child is safe and in good care, everything just seems easier. That’s our mission – to make sure you can rest easy knowing your kids are not only well cared for, but also enjoying themselves. Our Child Development Centers (CDC) are open to children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, for full-time or part-time care. Our classrooms provide fun, inclusive and engaging environments, individualized learning experiences that meet the needs of each child, and great opportunities for socialization! Whether you need full-time care or just some seasonal help – we’ve got an option for you.​

Blue Star Families Association: Blue Star Families was founded by military spouses in 2009 to empower families to thrive as they serve by connecting them with their civilian neighbors - people and organizations - to create strong communities of support. The goal of Blue Star Families’ research and policy work is to increase the awareness and understanding of military family life trends and the ramifications for both our Armed Forces and our American society. Through this work they are inspiring meaningful engagement between military and civilian neighbors in our communities. They are accomplishing this through individual research projects, policy analysis, and the seminal Comprehensive Report from our annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey.

Military Child Education Coalition: MCEC's mission is to ensure inclusive, quality educational experiences for all military children affected by mobility, family separation, and transition. MCEC offers numerous resources for parents, information about leadership camps and scholarships, and extensive training for educators about the needs of military-connected students.

Military State Policy Source: This site seeks to engage and educate state policymakers, not-for-profit associations, concerned business interests, and other state leaders about the needs of military members and their families

DoDEA The Military Interstate Compact Resources: The Interstate Commission was developed to establish a uniform standard that eases the state-to-state transition of military personnel, their spouses, and primarily their children as these children transfer from one state to another and from one state to another and from one school system to another as a direct result of the military parent's frequent reassignments. The MIC3 website offers numerous resources related to the Interstate Compact including one page reference documents and training modules.

American Red Cross: Emergency communication for military families, financial assistance, referral services, deployment support and services.

Veterans Crisis Line: Connects veterans in crisis and their families and friends with qualified, caring Department of Veterans Affairs responders through a confidential toll-free hotline, online chat, or text. Veterans and their loved ones can call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, chat online, or send a text message to 838255 to receive confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Support for deaf and hard of hearing individuals is available.

March2Success: Online study materials to help improve scores on standardized tests such as state exit exams, college entrance exams, military entrance exam (ASVAB) and others. Content includes self-paced study programs in Math, English and Science, with a focus of materials on grades 8-12.

National Military Family Association: Provides information and resources related to services and programs for military families.
​
Pets for Vets: Pairs veterans with shelter dogs that are specially selected to match the veterans' personality.

Our Military Kids: A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to provide support (grants) and recognition to military children. Grants pay for participation in activities that help children cope with stress and anxiety while their parents are recovering or absent.

Sesame Workshop: Provides much-needed support and practical education through Talk, Listen, Connect, a multiphase outreach initiative to help young kids through deployments, combat-related injuries and the death of a loved one.

Real Warriors: A multimedia public awareness campaign designed to encourage help-seeking behavior among service members, veterans and military families coping with invisible wounds.

National Career Development Association: Provides career development resource links for veterans and their spouses. Select "Special Populations" to access veteran and military-related resources.

Military Impacted Schools Association: A national organization of school superintendents with a higher concentration of military students. Provides useful links for military families and educator resources.

Housing Assistance for Veterans: After their hard work and sacrifice while serving the U.S., veterans return home in need of housing and assistance to re-enter into civilian life once again. There are different veteran housing assistance programs to help them find affordable permanent housing.
