Principal's Message
I understand why we, as parents, do not want our children leaving home without their cell phones. It's important for us to ensure their safety by giving them the means of instant communication with us throughout the day.
On the other hand, as a principal of a school, I also see, firsthand, the major disadvantages of students using their cell phones throughout the school day. Cell phone usage not only distracts students from learning, but it also affects their well-being.
According to a study in the Children and Society Journal, “Heavy cell phone use is not only correlated with bullying, it’s correlated with being bullied.” In addition, the use of cell phones to record other students is running rampant. Unfortunately, cell phones make it easy to spread instant rumors, to send hurtful texts, and to post inappropriate pictures.
Parents, that is why we need your help. Please talk to your children about using their cell phones responsibly and remind them of our school-wide rule, which is: No cell phones in the hallways during passing periods and in their classrooms.
Our students might be surprised to find that limiting their cell phone usage at school has benefits. As one educational leader explained to his school community, “It would help students focus on learning and take one element of distraction out of their life at least for the times they were at school - 71/2, eight hours of freedom from having to worry about what social media was thinking, saying, doing.”
Events & Honors:
Attention all Dolphins: Beginning February 5, 2024, all students must show that they are wearing their IDs on their lanyards upon entrance to the school. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action including In-house.
