Principal’s Message

Jackie Carducci GJHS Principal

TEST…that four letter word that many students do not like to hear.

“Man! Why do we have to take another MAP test?”

“Why do we have to practice for SBAC?”

“Why do we spend so much time on testing?”

These are all common questions students ask their teachers throughout the year.

Many argue that test scores are not always an accurate measure of students’ academic ability, nor is it always an accurate predictor of student success. However, testing is a way of life. Students have to pass a test to get their driver’s license, they have to pass a test to get into college, and as adults, they often have to pass a test to get a job.

So why not start preparing our students now by sharpening their test-taking skills and utilizing the upcoming MAPS and SBAC assessments to get a snapshot of where they are academically, where they should be, and how they can get there.

According to the American School Counselor Association, “School counselors recognize that standardized test results provide valuable information related to student achievement. However, school counselors also understand that some students struggle with standardized test practices that prevent these tests from providing an accurate reflection of their capabilities.”

While there are those students who look forward to testing, there are also those who are overcome with anxiety when they hear the word. Being prepared helps to minimize test anxiety and maximize performance for all students.

As the semester progresses, we will make it a priority to prepare our students to do their best on their upcoming MAPS and SBAC assessments. As part of our Greenspun family, we invite you to join us in this endeavor and to assist us in encouraging our students to stay positive whenever they hear that four letter word named TEST.
