Principal’s Message

Jackie Carducci GJHS Principal

Is it Time for a Quiet Hug?

As parents, we hug our children when we celebrate their accomplishments, when we share proud moments, and when they excel. But the question is…what about those times when they challenge us?

If you are like me, it may seem that our words are not always heard by our children. It is said that we are the sum of our five closest people, which is why the teen years can be so challenging. The messages from parents and close friends can often be in opposition, which makes this a confusing time for them. Add to that, the rigor of school and social media, and students often find themselves anxiety-ridden, stressed, and overwhelmed.

As parents, finding the balance between pushing them towards their goals and showing empathy can be difficult. When we are feeling this way, it just might be the time for a quiet hug that can make a world of difference for both of us.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the power and benefits of hugs. According to a Berkeley Wellbeing study, for example, research showed that hugs reduce the levels of cortisol in our blood, which lowers anxiety and stress. It also raises oxytocin, which generates a feeling of overall happiness.

Hugs have the potential to diminish feelings of sadness, loneliness, and anxiety. We may feel our teens pulling away from us most days, but pulling them in for a long quiet hug can send a message of the love and support they so desperately need.
