A Special Thank You to Martin Luther King Jr.

How many of us stop and think about the reason we celebrate holidays?  To many of our students, the significance of the holiday is a break from school. The question is, “How many students know the true meaning behind the holiday?”

This Monday, January 20, is a day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a great leader and teacher, whose dream was to bring justice, fairness, and peace to our society. Those who knew him described him as an educated, passionate, and peaceful man who was the spokesperson of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s and 60’s. But, he was much more than that.

Dr. King was also a humanitarian, which was reflected in his teachings and his dream of a world full of equitable opportunities for everyone. As he stated in his speech at Selma, Alabama years ago, “The time is always right to do what is right.” King lived by that motto and dedicated his life to teaching humans how to value each other.

This holiday is the perfect time to honor Dr. King. It is an opportunity to think of ways we can show others we value them and stand up for what is right in our school and our community. As one historian stated so eloquently, “King’s belief in the power of education, nonviolence, and unity reminds us that even small acts of kindness and fairness can create meaningful change.”
