Principal’s Message:

In his poem, Mother to Son, Langston Hughes writes, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” In just a few words, he captures a truth that runs through so much of Black history — the reality of obstacles faced and the determination to keep moving forward.
Black History Month is a time to reflect on those journeys — stories of perseverance, creativity, and leadership — while also celebrating the richness of Black culture. From music, literature, and art to innovation, leadership, and traditions, Black culture continues to influence our world.
When our students learn about leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., they hear his reminder that “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” His words echo Hughes’ idea — that progress often begins before the outcome is clear.
When they study Rosa Parks, students are reminded of her calm courage and her words, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.” Her words show that leadership rooted in quiet strength can create lasting and powerful change.
Black history is not only found in national headlines or history books. It is woven into the lives of many in our own school community, and celebrating the culture is just as important as recognizing achievements and struggles.
As we observe Black History Month, my hope is that students do more than memorize famous names and dates. I hope they notice determination when they see it and continue building their own staircases like the leaders before them — step by step — no matter how many tacks, splinters, and torn-up boards there are on the way up, echoing the resilient spirit Hughes celebrated in his poem, Mother to Son.
